My first time winning a prize at a networking event for asking the "best question"!

It's been seven (7) months since I started my position as the Brand and Community Engagement Coordinator at RCLF.

Because of the nature of my role, I have to go to A LOT of events... alone :'(

As an introvert, I was kinda dreading it. But then came the first event I've ever been to as a professional.

I thought "Damn. Networking is easier than I remember. Maybe professionals had networking on easy mode."

Which led me to compare my experience in networking as a student vs professional.

At first I thought...

Networking as a student feels harder… like you’re begging for a job… Whereas networking as a professional feels like building partnerships.

But after sitting with it, I don’t think that’s true.

I think the biggest difference is confidence and clarity.

As a student, I didn’t really know what I had to offer… or if I had any at all. I was trying to explain who I was and what I did… without fully understanding the value I bring.

And if we’re going to be honest, they don’t care if you need a job or not. They care about what you bring to the table. So if you’re unsure of your own worth, it will be harder to sell yourself.

Now, as a professional, it feels different.

I understand what I represent, the value we bring, and the role I play

So the conversation shifts.

Not because networking got easier…

but because I got clearer.

So maybe next time you get ready for an interview or a networking event, ask yourself: What kind of problems are these corporations facing and what value can I bring?

Well, that’s my secret to networking! Don’t get me wrong though… I’m still very shy. But understanding my value has helped me stepped out of my comfort zone and even won 2 prizes for asking the best questions!

With care,

Sam Iligan
